The ‘Greenman’ can be seen as a motif for the Spirit found in the cult of tree worship from Neolithic times onwards - he was the ‘Spirit of the Greenwood’. Until relatively recently many villages possessed a ‘Dancing Oak’ around which the populace would cavort on seasonal celebrations The idea of the Sacred Tree and Sacred Grove haunts the religions of the temperate western world and this is reflected in the ‘Greenman Oak’. There is also a possible connection with the Celtic ‘cult of the head’ - it was believed the soul and spirit resided in the head and could be thus captured - the severed heads of vanquished enemies being placed in niches of barrows & fougous (underground chambers) and revered and consulted.
This fabulous wall plaque was designed, sculpted and manufactured in England, using resin-bonded Terracotta .
Modern moulding techniques faithfully reproduce the intricate and painstaking work of the sculptor whilst giving the appearance of real carved stone or sculpted terracotta.
Since resin is completely weatherproof, you can hang this impressive Greenman Wall plaque either inside or outside the home
